Horses have always been an important part of Dr. Erskine’s life. He was involved in 4-H, Pony Club and his family bred and showed Quarter Horses. He worked on breeding and training farms when he was young and became interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine at an early age.
Dr. Erskine majored in Biology as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech. He then attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech and graduated in 1988.
Dr. Erskine worked at Penn Paddock Equine Center in Pennsylvania from 1988-1990. The practice included work at a Thoroughbred racetrack, a hospital for surgical and medical cases, and a large ambulatory service.
In 1990, Dr. Erskine returned to Maryland to join Damascus Equine Associates. Here he has developed a large ambulatory practice, focusing on sport and pleasure horses. He began a veterinary internship program for new graduates in 2001. He emphasizes “patient-first” progressive clinical medicine based on the specific needs of the individual patient.
In 1996, Dr. Erskine became the first practicing equine veterinarian in Maryland to be board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). ABVP promotes and recognizes advanced knowledge, proficiency and expertise in species-oriented veterinary clinical practice. Dr. Erskine was elected Vice President of ABVP in April 2010. On July 1, 2011, Dr. Erskine became President-elect of ABVP.
He is on the Maryland Horse Council (MHC) Board of Directors and was President from 2005-2009. Dr. Erskine is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and serves on it’s Infectious Disease Committee. He is also an Executive Committee member on the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center Council.
